The Rotary Clubs of Belmont, Thornlie, Margaret River and Gosnells have provided funds to the Women and Infants Research Foundation for the establishment of the first modern human milk bank in Australia. The human milk bank, now named the Perron Rotary Express Milk Bank (PREM Bank), aims to optimise the nourishment of Western Australian pre-term and ill infants who require more breast milk than their mothers can provide. The PREM Bank will screen milk donors, then collect and store milk which will be pasteurised and made available to pre-term and ill very low birth weight babies. Following the establishment of a conventional milk bank, the aim is to develop new technology (Ultra-filtration) for the concentration of human milk protein. This will allow the fortification of human milk, with human milk derived protein, to meet the higher nutritional demands of pre-term babies.
