When babies are born prematurely, it is often difficult for their mothers to establish or maintain their production of breastmilk.

Currently, when a mother is unable to feed her baby her own milk, we use artificial formula. Unfortunately, artificial formula is still quite different to human milk and can cause severe problems for the immature digestive system of a pre-term baby.

The aim of establishing a human milk bank is to give Western Australian families the best possible alternative nutrition to a mother’s own milk.
