Part of the Women and Infants Research Foundation’s (WIRF) mission is to promote high quality research and to foster new researchers.  One way in which the Foundation seeks to do this is to offer Top-up PhD Scholarship funding.

The PhD Scholarships are a component of a wider strategy designed to nurture and develop promising researchers in line with the Foundation’s mission (see www.wirf.com.au/go/who-we-are/our-mission ).

The WIRF will offer the following Research Scholarships:

1. Postgraduate Scholarship for PhD Candidature

    a) King Doctor of Philosophy Scholarship – a distinguished student scholarship to the value of Hackett Scholarship ~ $30,000/a year stipend for three years in the first instance (with a possibility of an extension for up to a further 6 months to a total of $105,000) plus $5,000 allowance for consumables and economy travel from WIRF. In most circumstances such students would have been awarded a Postgraduate scholarship and WIRF would top up the existing scholarship to the level of a Hackett Scholarship. The applicant must meet the requirements for candidature for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by The University of Western Australia, School of PostGraduate Studies. Not more than one of King Scholarship to be awarded in any one calendar. The King Scholarship will be open to students who enrolled to undertake their candidature at the School of Women’s and Infants’ Health

    b) WIRF Top Up Doctor of Philosophy Scholarship - funding requires equivalent funding from The University Western Australian (eg Faculty or School) or comparable source (eg Research Grant).  In total the scholarship funding would be $25,000 (~$12,500 from a University and ~$12,500 from WIRF), plus $3,000 allowance for consumables and economy travel from WIRF. The applicant must meet the requirements for candidature for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by The University of Western Australia, School of PostGraduate Studies. Funding will be for three years in the first instant with a possibility of an extension of WIRF funding for up to a further 12 months subject to demonstrated need for an extension.

    c) WIRF Part-time Doctor of Philosophy- funding requires equivalent funding from another source (eg Research Grant).  In total the scholarship funding would be on a pro rata basis at a similar level of funding to the WIRF Top Up Doctor of Philosophy Scholarship (that is, the candidate would enrol half-time would receive 50% of the yearly value of WIRF Top Up Doctor of Philosophy Scholarship but for double the time (that is, 6 years with a possibility of an extension of WIRF funding for up to a further 2 years subject to demonstrated need for an extension. The applicant must meet the requirements for candidature for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by The University of Western Australia, School of Post Graduate Studies

Conditions

1.    The applicant must be accepted for enrolment by The University of Western Australia, School of PostGraduate Studies

2.    Maximum funds available for continuing and new scholarships - $75,000.00 per annum.

3.    The Applicant must be integral to the King Edward Memorial Hospital campus.

4.    It is expected that copies of the University Annual Progress Reports will be forwarded to WIRF by the student prior to the release of the subsequent year’s funding.

5.    This funding is conditional on the candidate and organisation/institution acknowledging WIRF’s support in subsequent publications and presentations.

6.    The allowance for consumables and economy travel from WIRF is payable by WIRF to the supplier upon receipt of a tax invoice. The allowance is exclusive of GST.

Out of season applicants will be considered if funding cap has not been reached in any one year.

Commencement Date
An applicant who is offered a scholarship but does not return the signed offer of award by the date indicated on the offer will forfeit the offer. Any recipient unable to commence within six months of the originally intended commencement date will also forfeit the offer.
